This day of mindfulness is open for everyone. It will include sitting meditation\, a Mindfulness Training Recitation Ceremony\, a live talk from one of MorningSun’s teachers\, outdoor walking meditation\, and lunch.\nSunday Afternoon Order of Interbeing Gathering:  After the program concludes at 2pm\, there will be a gathering for Order of Interbeing members and aspirants from 2:00-3:30.  During this gathering we will blend Dharma Sharing\, training in facilitation skills\, and deep looking into practices and issues pertaining to the OI community.\nIf you are a full weekend guest\, MorningSun will prepare your meals while you are here\, with the exception of Saturday lunch (bagged vegan BYO).\n\n\n\n\nSIMPLY SUNDAY PROGRAM –  Sunday 9:30-2:00 (or 4pm for OI) A similar program to our regular Sunday practice at MorningSun with the addition of a mindfulness trainings recitation and practice guidance for deepening our practice. SUMMARY:Non-Harming Lives in My Heart
DESCRIPTION:Practicing kindness and compassion in our families\, our communities\, and our society\nA Retreat with Our Founding Dharma Teachers Fern and Michael\nIn a time of reckless violence and cold hatred\, we must be diligent in walking the path of peace and kindness. \nDuring this retreat we will water the seeds of determination\, clarity and resolve on the Path as we cut through the confusion and chaos to breathe\, walk\, rest\, and heal our bodies and minds with gentle awareness\, deep understanding and compassion.  We are the very vessels of kindness and compassion that can bring healing to our loved ones and to society. \nIn our tradition\, the deep peace and silence of meditation is cultivated in formal moments of sitting\, walking\, deep relaxation\, eating\, and sharing groups. With the guidance of Fern and Michael\, both senior Dharma teachers in the Plum Village tradition\, and the support of our shared mindfulness practice in all these events\, we can restore our confidence in the potential of humanity to live beautifully and compassionately together. \n\n\nFern Dorresteyn and Michael Ciborski \nFern has spent her life exploring more sustainable ways of living\, personal transformation and the ideal of working with others to create positive change. As a young adult she traveled to Plum Village Monastery in France\, together with her future husband Michael Ciborski\, where they lived for nine years\, seven of them as ordained Buddhist monastics. They were fortunate to live and work closely with Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh to offer meditation retreats around the world. In 2003 they returned to lay life and co-founded MorningSun. \nFern and Michael are members of the Council of Elders of the North American Dharma Teachers Council (NADTC) in the Plum Village tradition and travel across North America to lead retreats throughout the year. \nFern has served multiple terms on the Board for the NADTC. She is currently the Program Director at Morning Sun\, and is continuously learning as she brings the practice into her daily life with her community and her three children. She holds a Birth-to-Three WECAN recognized certificate from Sophia’s Hearth Early Childhood Center and is always seeking opportunities to support the well being of children and families. \nMichael is an active mentor for the Order of Interbeing\, guiding aspiring members into the community.  He is also musician\, and informally studied voice training and chanting of several European and Asian traditions\, serving for several years as an English language chant master in the monastery. Michael is also accomplished in building and design with a focus on sustainable and natural build techniques. His great joy is continuously discovering how to open his heart wider with each new challenge and relationship. \n\n\nLogistics: \nArrival for the retreat is Thursday\, May 14th\, from 3pm to 6pm. Departure is on Sunday May 17th\, after lunch at 2pm. Please provide your own transportation to and from MorningSun. \nAccommodations:  \nUpdate 4/9/26: Dear friends\, we have plenty of space in El Cielo\, our indoor sleeping accommodations\, small rooms or singles. We also have four beds available in Harmony Yurt. And we have a few camping spots still available. And of course\, commuting is always welcomed. And for some of us with full-time work\, study and family commitments\, taking time for a retreat is not possible (for example: missing work means losing some of our essential income OR we are lacking funds to cover childcare while we’re away from home). If this sounds like you\, please take a moment to connect with us.  We want to make every effort to help you attend this special program while at the same time helping you honor work and family needs.  The Spiritual Refuge Scholarship makes scholarships of 100% possible\, AND\, can offer additional funds (limited) to help us care for ourselves and our loved ones while we are away from work and home obligations.  Please inquire (email) if you feel you have these needs.  Working compassionately together\, we know we can overcome systemic financial obstacles. \n\n\nCLICK HERE TO ACCESS THE\nBIPOC All Ages Retreat Registration Form\n\nFor more questions\, please email us at morningsunoffice@gmail.com \n\n

SUMMARY:Coming Home As Men: A Mindfulness Retreat for Men
DESCRIPTION:We feel held in the circle\, basking in the qualities of belonging\, dignity\, worth\, aspiration\, and compassionate presence. \n“We met in a drought. The land said no to fire\, but our hearts gave off their own light\, a quiet illumination in a dark and thirsty world. Each of us met our own edge in some way\, and still we showed up for one another. These qualities are still alive in us\, and we trust they live in you too. The work isn’t over; the bell is still ringing.” \nThis retreat is for those who identify as men and want to explore the legacy of masculinity — healing its wounds\, reclaiming its beauty\, touching our ancestral strength\, and reshaping it for future generations. It is grounded in the Plum Village mindfulness tradition\, with space for each person’s unique experience and voice. \n\nWhat does it mean to be a man rooted in presence\, humility\, and strength?\nWho am I\, and who are we beneath the armor we were taught to wear?\nHow do I relate to other men when performance gives way to authenticity?\n\nThis retreat invites you into a space of sincere practice and shared reflection. We will enjoy the crisp autumn air while connecting around the fire\, and hiking through the golden falling leaves. Through sitting and walking meditation\, Dharma sharing\, deep listening\, and circle practice\, we’ll explore the arc of our lives—from the messages we received as boys\, to the identities we perform as men\, to the possibilities we long to grow into together. \n\n \n\nYour retreat facilitators: \nAustin has experience working with men’s issues both professionally and personally. He has a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and has led multiple men’s groups in a mental health setting. He was ordained as a monastic in the Plum Village Tradition in 2015 and returned to lay life in 2020. His relationship to practice and spiritual work is rooted in maintaining the integrity of his root spiritual tradition while also allowing space for creativity\, humor\, and play. Austin is both nervous and excited to be organizing his first men’s retreat at Morning Sun. \nDavid’s most enduring joy in life has been offering and receiving the gifts of true friendship and community. He first ordained as a monk with Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in 2005 and spent several years living in the Plum Village tradition monasteries before finding his niche in community lay life. His new book\, “Thriving Together: 9 Principles for Cocreating True Community” illuminates the real struggles\, joys\, and deep satisfaction of cultivating mindful community. David is a white-presenting Chinese-American cis man\, committed to learning about the resiliency of his ancestors who both caused and were harmed by intergenerational trauma. Some of David’s favorite things to do are drinking tea in nature with friends\, Sangha game nights\, conscious dance\, drinking poetry\, and sunset meditations. \nGary Honey Bear “HB” is a developer\, musician\, and practitioner of Buddhist and psychological inquiry. He brings a deep commitment to healing\, clarity\, and relational presence. His path is recovery\, art\, and dharma—drawing fro\nm trauma-informed recovery (including ACoA)\, Plum Village mindfulness (ordained in the Order of Interbeing in 2009)\, and music rooted in improvisation and deep listening. Whether in silence or in song\, HB seeks the rhythms that restore relationship and reveal what matters. Through music\, facilitation\, or quiet care behind the scenes\, he serves as a bridge between inner work and outer action—creating spaces where people can meet themselves\, and each other\, with honesty\, compassion\, and courage. \n\n\nLogistics: \nArrival for the retreat is Thursday\, October 15th\, from 4pm to 6pm.
